When some basic principles of bed maintenance are understood, you'll see the importance a proper edge brings to the appearance of your landscape not only today but also how it contributes to ease of maintenance in the future. Edging not only defines and separates planting beds from turf, but allows plant material to grow and mature inside these lines without the continuous pruning that disfigures many plantings over time.

This is probably the most underused landscape technique I can think of. If understood and applied properly, this would drastically change and recreate the curb appeal of countless landscapes.

Keep it simple

Combine large, mature evergreen trees into one big bed, eliminating weed eating and mowing underneath.

Professional Tip

Kill all grass under evergreen or pine trees and make edge one foot out past where the ends of the branches stop now. This will eliminate all mowing and weed eating under the trees and allow the trees to continue to grow a little. Re-edge pine trees every 2- 3 years when branches once again grow past the edge.

Combine shrub beds

Combine shrubs that have grown together into one bed, mulch and eliminate all grass between.

Lay out edging lines with string or garden hose until you practice

Use spray paint to draw lines before you edge. painted lines are easier to follow.

Edging tree rings

For perfect tree rings, tie a string to the trunk, extend the proper distance, walk around painting the perfect circle.

Make sure your tree ring fits the size of the tree.

A tree with a tunk 24" wide, don't finish the edge 2 feet out from trunk. 24" tree, the ring should be no smaller than 8 feet out from the trunk. Big trees, big edges or no edges at all. With big trees, 18" wide trunks and up, if you decide not to put an edge around it, it is ok. Just spray roundup around the base, 4"-6" out from trunk.

Smaller trees, little rings. Never make a mulch ring smaller then 18" out from trunk.

Always round off your corners

Always have round corners in planting beds, never square. Hard to mow.

Long straight lines

If you have long straight lines in beds take the time and make straight. You will impress any landscaper that drives by and it will look awesome.

Wrap edges around side of building

Always wrap your bed edges from front of building around the corner to about 8'-10' down the side. This simply gives a finished look to the corner. Do not end the edge at the corner.

Professional Tip

Kill all the grass under evergreen or pine trees and make edge one foot out past where the ends of the branches stop now.

This will allow mowing around the evergreens without breaking branches, poking yourself in the eye and allow the plant continue to grow without cutting back or limbing up. Re-edge pine trees every 2- 3 years when branches once again grow past the edge.
